NEW BUILDING F.A.Q.
Updated: 11/13/2025
CHECK THIS PAGE FOR UPDATES ABOUT THE NEW LIBRARY BUILDING.
We are still several years away from constructing the new building. So, the information provided here is subject to change. Our intent is to post updates when significant progress is made.
As a reminder, the original plan, when the Library Board asked voters to approve our building millage, was to collect the millage for ten years and then build the new building. This course of action avoids the interest and fees associated with bonds.
When will the new library building be finished?
Our current projection is that the new library building will be finished and open to the public by September 2030.
When will construction begin?
Actual construction is projected to begin in the spring of 2029. Of course, there is much work that will be done between now and then. Our next step is to select a construction manager. We will begin that process in November or December of 2026. See the "Scheduled Timeline" for more details.
How much will the new building cost?
Our most recent projection is that the total project cost (planning, site development, construction, move-in etc.) will be $7,165,000. This number reflects our best guess about the rising costs of construction based on current conditions.
How much of that cost has already been raised?
As of June 30, 2025, the building millage and earned interest have accumulated $3,269,877. We estimate that tax revenue will increase by an average of 2% over the remaining years of the millage. We further estimate that interest earnings will be average 3% annually. If those estimates hold true, by July 2030, we will have raised over $7,500,000 for the new building.
In addition to those funds, on November 12, 2025, the Library Board voted to commit $500,000 of the Library's Operating Fund Balance to capital projects. This money will be available to offset unforeseen increases in the building project costs, or for any other capital improvements the Library may need before or after the project is completed.
How large will the new building be?
The conceptual designs are for a new library building of 12,000 square feet. That is roughly the same size as the former library building on Middlebelt and Joun Hauk. As we get closer to the start of construction, we will reevaluate the projected costs and projected available funds. It may be necessary to alter the plans to keep the costs manageable.
